Architecture

Architecture is a versatile discipline which has a close relation with science, art and technology; it has a strong impact in everyday life of each human being. Design and production of built environment are the main focuses in the field of architecture. The emergence of architecture dates back to antiquity and throughout history the basic necessities of human as having a shelter, living and working places, social spaces etc. have provided to form the architectural and urban landscape.

Arts and society are based on architectural culture since the ancient times. Nowadays, architecture has, more than ever, a strong impact on livings and the architect has major responsibilities for the welfare of the people and for the contemporary challenge of finding a balance between the city and the natural environment, through a sustainable architecture which takes into consideration the renewal energies. Therefore, architects are responsible for the construction of built environment properly.

The Department of Architecture purposes to develop the consciousness of the students on the built environment and bring them up as the architects who are able to express their creative and innovative projects. The department pays attention to interaction with other disciplines and to develop projects in participative processes. Interaction with diverse architectural cultures and access to variable sources in the field enrich the department’s expertise thanks to the international milieu, among academicians and students as well, within ABU- Antalya Bilim University.

The Department of Architecture offers undergraduate degree. After the four-year education program, the student gains Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. The program’s main focus is to develop the student’s perceptions and qualifications in the context of design, space and living. The curriculum comprises courses in mathematics, arts, culture, design and history. Design studios (according to subject projects individually or in groups), courses on historical heritage, sustainability, construction and materials, representation techniques and urban design take on an important part in education process too. Moreover, the students have a confrontation with professional practice in construction sites and architectural offices within the framework of summer practice and professional practice courses.

Specific Educational Goals

At the end of the academic educational program, the holder of Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture must be able to identify, formulate and solve, even in innovative way, project and design issues of architecture, urban planning and construction, which may also require an interdisciplinary and multi-scale approach.

The holder of Bachelor’s Degree must be able to organize compatible processing projects of urban space and landscape, as well as building and infrastructural works even with high spatial complexity. He has to ensure formal, structural and functional quality managing the realization and coordinating, where necessary, other experts of the branch, utilizing suitable languages for the communication of the architectural project. For this aim, the holder of Bachelor’s Degree has to acquire a deep knowledge of natural and built environment issues, an attitude of understanding the most conceptual and operating tools of architecture, with reference to the specialist matters required to achieve an adequate quality of the projects. He also has to acquire full mastery of the aspects related to the feasibility of projects in different scales, from the architectural to the urban and territorial ones.
